Gospel in Life: Justice

Posted: 23 March 2012 / Jeremiah 5:27-28, Luke 10:25-37

One of the largest objections to faith is the issue of injustice: "How can there be so much injustice in the world? Why doesn't God do something about it?"

But, when you start to read the Bible, you begin to realise that God also has this objection. He is shocked and wounded by the injustices committed in the world, and outraged that his own people cause much of it. In Jeremiah 5:27-28 he laments the society which is obese in prosperity but malnourshed in mercy:

Like cages full of birds,
their houses are full of deceit;
they have become rich and powerful
and have grown fat and sleek.
Their evil deeds have no limit;
they do not seek justice.
They do not promote the case...

Sweet Nothings postcard, Easter in Surry Hills Sweet Nothings postcard, Easter in Surry Hills

All the talks from this series in 2012 are now available online or on the iTunes podcast here.

Join us for Easter in Surry Hills, come by yourself and meet some new friends or just relax in the back row. We don't expect everyone to be a Christian, in fact we love the fact that many are coming to check out Jesus for the first time. In the service there is a time of prayer, singing and a talk from the Bible. We usually have time for questions and if you don't want to sing or prayer that's okay.

Steph Lentz talks to Toby

Posted: 28 February 2012

Steph Lentz recently caught up with Toby and asked him a few questions about being on mission in Surry Hills and the inner city.

"'Prostitutes are in no danger of finding their present life so satisfactory that they cannot turn to God: the proud, the avaricious, the self-righteous, are in that danger.' (quoting C.S. Lewis) The biggest challenge we see is how to get the hipsters, bohos, young professionals etc. – who find their lives so good that they don’t need to turn to God! – to take an interest in Jesus." – Toby

Why the City is a Great Place to Raise Kids

Posted: 17 February 2012 / Jeremiah 29:4-14

Here are five reasons Liz and I think the city is a great place to raise kids:

  1. The great diversity of people will teach them how to relate to people who are different from them.
  2. The smallness of their kids church will teach them that they are missionaries to the city.
  3. The art and culture will teach them to appreciate common grace and the gifts God has given unbelievers.
  4. The size and complexity will teach them to be wise, resourceful and to grow up taking responsibility.
  5. The sinners, the sinned against, and those who are marginalised will teach them that our city needs the love of Jesus very much.

Tim Keller has taught me more about cities from the Bible...

You Can Change

Posted: 06 February 2012 / Mark 5:1-20

Last night I spoke about the life changing power of Jesus in the life of the demonised man in Mark 5:1-20. The point of the sermon, and this is the mission of our church, is that when people meet Jesus, their lives get compleatly changed. That is what our church is about: meeting Jesus and having your life changed.

A good book on this subject is You Can Change by Tim Chester. Here is chapter five to download and read for free: You Can Change – Chapter Five: What Truths Do You Need To Turn To?. Pay attention especially to the '4 G's'.

You can buy You Can Change from The Book Depository here.

The Road to Contentment

Posted: 10 January 2012 / Hebrews 13:5, 1 Timothy 6:6-8, 1 Tim 6:6–12, Proverbs 19:23

Very often we arrive at contentment by the wrong road.

I think the major way most of us find contentment is by despising the good things others have. We look at their new home, new job, new car, their relationships or their beauty, or whatever it is, and we covet it. But once we realise we will never be happy coveting, we move to despising. We look at our friends new home, which we would love to have and say, “yeah but who would want to live in that suburb or that street.” Or we look at their new job and say, “yeah but her boss is a tyrant, and she is going to be working on Saturdays.” Or we look at their new car and say, “that car is such a waste of money.” In other words we...
