UPDATE
All the talks from this series in 2012 are now available online or on the iTunes podcast here.

Join us for Easter in Surry Hills, come by yourself and meet some new friends or just relax in the back row. We don't expect everyone to be a Christian, in fact we love the fact that many are coming to check out Jesus for the first time. In the service...

Gospel in Life

Posted: 12 February 2012

How is the gospel lived out in all of life?
Starting 12th of February we are having a series of 8 talks on 'Gospel in Life'. The first week we will open with the theme of the city: our home now, the world that is. The last week closes with the theme of the eternal city: our heavenly home, the world that is to come. In between we will look at how the...

The Multicultural Jesus

Posted: 20 December 2011 / John 1:1-2, 14, Mark 10:45, Colossians 1:19-20, Revelation 7:9

A common misconception about Christianity is that it is a Western religion. In fact this could not be further from the truth. The Encyclopaedia Britannica describes Christianity as the first world religion. The notion that a religion could be across the nations, across cultures was a new thing. Christianity redefined what a religion was. It also happens to...

The King’s Kingdom

Posted: 11 November 2011 / Mark 3:28–29

This Sunday we come to one of the hardest sayings of Jesus in the whole gospel. He says,

"Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” (Mark 3:28–29)

The greatest atheist of the 20th Century, Bertrand...

The King’s Healing

Posted: 14 October 2011 / Mark 2:1-12

‘Everything I learned about human nature I learned from me,’ wrote the playwright Anton Chekhov, and the characters he so vividly created – with all their selfishness, their hatred, their dark and desperate desires, their hopelessness – they do rather well to describe us all. Imagine a story whose characters are taken from your own inner life and blown up...

New Series: King’s Cross

Posted: 16 September 2011 / Mark 1:1-15

This Sunday we are beginning a new series on Mark’s gospel called ‘King’s Cross’. This is the title of a new book by Tim Keller, which would be good to read alongside the sermon series, but it also reflects what the gospel of Mark is about. Mark presents Jesus’ life in two symmetrical acts:

Act 1 relates to his identity as King over all things (Mark...

What God is Doing

Posted: 09 September 2011 / Titus 1:1-4

Nick Cave wrote a song which is realistic about the grit of life:

In heaven His throne is made of gold,
Where the ark of His testament is stowed,
A throne from which I'm told all history does unfold,
Down here it's made of wood and wire,
And my body is on fire,
And God is never far away.

Nick Cave is dealing with the fact that there is a sense...

The Claim of Jesus

Posted: 02 September 2011

C.S. Lewis famously said:

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice.

This Sunday we are looking at Jesus' most devilish, most insane, or most...

The Message of Mission

Posted: 29 July 2011 / Jonah 4

Jonathan Swift once famously said:

We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.

That line could sum up the problem in the life of Jonah.  His hatred ate away at the walls of his soul. Nowhere is that more clear than in Jonah 4 (this Sunday). In this chapter, he prays:

Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it...

Suffering in the city

Posted: 06 July 2011 / 1 Peter 3:8 - 4:19

Last week I spoke about men, women and marriage in the city. One of the most striking examples of a beautiful and fearless woman who hopes in God is that of Joni Eareckson Tada. Joni grew up riding horses, hiking, playing tennis and loving to swim. One summer day in July 1967, while on a beach with some friends, Joni dove into the bay not knowing how...
