Join Our Team — Ministry Apprentice

Posted: 17 January 2017

Job Title:  Ministry Apprentice
Reports to:  Lead Pastor
Location:  Surry Hills
Special Conditions: Full time (3.5 days ministry experience + 1.5 days MTS curriculum)
Open to male and female applicants

Vine Church exists to make thousands of disciples across the city of Sydney. In the past four and a half years, we’ve grown from a small group of people meeting in an inner city townhouse into an exciting and vibrant community with over 200 people gathering each week. We love Jesus and are passionate about seeing him change lives.

1. Position Purpose

Vine Church is offering a two year, hands-on, full-time ministry apprenticeship called the Ministry Training Strategy (MTS) for men and women seeking an opportunity to grow as a minister to others in the context of a local church. The apprenticeship is centred on prayer, Bible study and practical ministry and will help you work out how you might plug in to grow God’s Kingdom with the rest of your life.

2. Main Responsibilities

The particular ministry opportunities available depend on the unique gifts and interests of each apprentice, but a number of possible opportunities include:

Mission

  • Leading people through Christianity Explored and Basic
  • Joining a team to start an afterschool kids club or Friday night youth group
  • Teaching scripture in local schools
  • Coordinating the Bread of Life team, and providing hope for those in need

Membership

  • Connecting with people who are new at church and helping them find a home
  • Caring for those who are doing it tough: sick, struggling, travelling, recovering or grieving
  • Running events which bring people together, including Newcomers Nights, Weekend Away, Man Camp etc.

Maturity

  • Meeting one to one with men for prayer, bible reading and encouragement
  • Leading a Community Group
  • Coordinating Faith & Work events

Ministry

  • Helping people find opportunities to use their gifts to build the church
  • Training Ministry Team Leaders to be more effective in leading their teams

Magnification

  • Leading Sunday services
  • Leading bands and musicians in making God centred music for our services
  • Coordinating and promoting prayer through Prayer & Praise Nights and other opportunities

Kids & Youth Ministry

  • Leading or serving in a team teaching the Bible to preschool or primary kids or teenagers

3. Special Conditions

The scholarship prescribed by MTS is $23,904 pa. Due to the higher cost of living in the city, Vine Church has committed to raising the scholarship to $32,000 pa, 50% of which is raised by the apprentice. While fundraising can be daunting, it is an important part of ministry for at least three reasons:

  • Fundraising forces us to depend on God;
  • Fundraising challenges us to put before our Christian friends and family the priorities of the kingdom; and
  • Fundraising opens us supportive partnerships that enrich both the giver and receiver.

For expressions of interest, please send a brief CV including your church background and any ministry experience to our Lead Pastor, Toby Neal (toby@vinechurch.com.au).

Apprenticeship start date is typically January each year, but exceptions will be made for the right candidates.

4. Typical Week

This is a typical week for an apprentice at Vine Church. Please note the mix of study/training and hands-on ministry experience opportunities. As one of the objectives of MTS is to enable an apprentice to experience life ‘as a full-time Gospel worker’ this typical week has been structured to replicate the hours a committed lay church member (who works full-time) would spend at work and at church, i.e. 5 regular working days plus 1–2 nights and also Sunday.
